Dental Crowns in Ashburn VA
What are dental crowns?
Crowns are a restorative procedure used to improve your tooth’s shape and/or size or to strengthen a tooth. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or have portions destroyed by tooth decay. Furthermore, dental crowns work as a preventative measure from further damage. Dental crowns are a great option for restoring damaged teeth and are a standard procedure at Ashburn Dental Care.
A crown is a “cap” cemented onto an existing tooth that usually covers the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both metal and porcelain. The type of crown is best determined based on individual cases, however ceramic crowns are preferred for the front teeth as they look natural. Some patients opt for the porcelain-on-metal crowns are they have the structural integrity of metal and the natural aesthetic of ceramic crowns.
Why are dental crowns needed?
When there is irreversible damage to the tooth’s enamel the best option is to have a dental crown procedure to protect the integrity of a tooth. These procedures are extremely effective for infected or damaged teeth.
Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are also needed when there is insufficient tooth strength to hold a filling. Unlike fillings, which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth.
How do they look?
We value your smile at Ashburn Dental Care and we can complete these procedures in a manner that individualizes treatment for each patient making it look natural while also restoring oral health.
Your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression, which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed. Learn more about our tooth extractions.

Before the Procedure
Just like everything else at Ashburn Dental Care, we want the best for our patients, and if a patient has the intention of getting a dental crown to improve their smile or wants better oral health and cosmetic improvement we encourage patients to have their teeth whitened before this procedure. It not only ensures that the crown color will be more appealing to you, but it improves the quality of your smile. At Ashburn Dental Care, we offer teeth whitening procedures. The reason for having a teeth whitening before having a crown procedure is that if the procedure is done before whitening, the color of the crown will be like the teeth before the whitening. The material the crowns are made from is designed to match that of the teeth at the time of the crowns procedure and it is bleach and stain-resistant meaning the crown would appear to be less white than the teeth IF the whitening is done after the crown.
What to do before a procedure?
When prepping for the procedure, Dr. Rizvi recommends taking the day off from work and if possible take a couple of days off as the teeth are sensitive after this procedure. This sensitivity is normal and is a good sign of proper oral hygiene. Taking off from work makes your life as the patient easier and you wont have the stresses of work compounded on the effort of managing the new crown.
Ashburn, Virginia: During the Dental Crown Procedure
This is an important feature as a smile is vital for social and professional success. Dr. Rizvi at Ashburn Dental Care is a cosmetic dentist who will ensure the crown looks natural in your mouth and each individual procedure is handled with the utmost care and attention to detail. At Ashburn Dental Care, we ensure our patients are comfortable and at ease by using local anesthesia or laughing gas.
What does a normal crown procedure look like?
First, an impression of a patient’s teeth is taken, or Dr. Rizvi could use 3D scanning software (Galilaeos) to design the crowns unique to each patient. When placing the dental crown around a tooth, Ashburn Dental Care starts by preparing the tooth. Secondly, a portion of the tooth’s enamel is removed so there is room for the new crown to surround the tooth without crowding the neighboring teeth. Thirdly, a temporary crown is placed for a minimum of two weeks until the lab creates the crown using the impressions. When complete, the patient returns to our Broadlands office, and the temporary crown is removed.
I don’t want to wait 2 weeks for my crown
At Ashburn Dental Care, we have the CEREC milling machine and the 3D Galilaeos software that allows Dr. Zia Rizvi to create certain crowns in-house. After the 3D scan is taken, the details are tweaked by the doctor himself ensuring the shape, spacing, and features have a natural impression in the mouth and look inconspicuous. In under 45 minutes, the crown is milled in-house using CEREC technology. the ceramic/porcelain crown is then fitted the SAME DAY. Same-day crowns are convenient to the patient and minimize the number of visits the patient has to make to Ashburn Dental Care (42882 Truro Parrish Dr. Ashburn, VA, 20175).
For both the same-day crowns are the lab-created dental crowns, the ‘cap’ is bonded to the tooth and the patient’s smile is restored along with their oral health.
After the Procedure
It is normal to have sensitive teeth for a few days after getting a dental crown procedure. At Ashburn Dental care, the patients are treated gently and kept as comfortable as possible to experience the least discomfort possible. To combat mild pain after the procedure, oral pain medication is recommended until a patient fully recovers. The crown will ensure that the previously damaged tooth will not be exposed and the pain from that damaged tooth will be eliminated as the crown acts as a shield. After the procedure, a patient is able to eat normally, sleep normally, and speak normally and even better than before the crown was placed. This is why crowns are even recommended to patients with sensitive teeth as the sensitivity is largely diminished if not eliminated with the placement of a crown. crowns enable a patient to go back to their active lifestyles worry and hassle-free.
